Your day in a licensed London taxi

This is the longest and most detailed route here, and the vehicle is the reason it can be. A licensed London taxi uses bus lanes, makes turns other vehicles cannot, and pulls in at the kerb outside almost anything. On a twenty-five-stop route through central London that is worth more than horsepower.

The route runs west to east across the whole of the centre: Kensington Palace, Hyde Park and Mayfair first, then Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben, then Trafalgar Square, Soho, Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden, then Fleet Street, St Paul’s Cathedral, Smithfield and Guildhall, and finally Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.

Three to eight hours is the booked range rather than a fixed duration, so tell the operator what your connection allows and the route is cut to fit. Pickup is from your terminal, or from a hotel if the connection runs overnight. Air conditioning and on-board WiFi are included; entry to anything you stop at is not.

Where the cab goes, west to east

8. Tower Bridge and the Tower — The far end of the route, then back to the airport.

Book this if there are four to six of you and the connection is long

The fare covers the cab up to six passengers, which is the highest cap on any per-vehicle product here. At six people an eight-hour day works out around $206 each, and nobody is sitting in a third row straining to hear.

It also suits anyone who wants breadth. Twenty-five stops across Kensington, Westminster, the West End, the City and the south bank is a genuine survey of central London rather than a highlights reel, and it needs the long end of the range to work.

Choose the six-hour per-person run instead if there are one or two of you

A whole-cab fare is poor arithmetic for a solo traveller or a couple. If there are one or two of you, the six-hour tour from LHR is priced by the head and covers the Westminster and City stops for a fraction of this.

It is also the wrong product for a short connection. Three hours is the bottom of the range and the route is built for the top of it; on five hours or less you are paying for reach you cannot use. The short-layover page sets out what fits instead.

From the terminal you arrive at, or from your hotel if the connection runs overnight — both are offered. Heathrow runs four passenger terminals, numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5, and a free shuttle bus between them every 10 minutes if you land and depart from different buildings.

Departure times run from six in the morning, seven days a week, which is unusually early and makes this one of the few products that suits a red-eye arrival. Confirmation takes up to 48 hours, so book ahead rather than on the morning.
