Book this if you are one or two travellers

A per-person fare with group discounts is the right shape when there are one or two of you, because you are not paying for empty seats. It is also the longest standard duration among the Heathrow products, so you get the most hours for the money at small party sizes.

It suits anyone who wants the road time stated up front. This operator is unusually direct about what six hours actually contains, which is the kind of thing you only appreciate after a tour that was not.

Choose a whole-car fare instead if there are five or more of you

Once you are past three or four travellers, a whole-car fare wins on arithmetic and on comfort. The five-and-a-half-hour tour from Heathrow covers eleven stops for one price up to four people.

Larger groups should also think about the vehicle itself. Reviewers travelling as a party of eight describe the back rows struggling to hear the commentary, so ask the operator what they are sending before you book — or take a black cab, where six people sit facing each other.

Heathrow runs four passenger terminals, numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5, and a free shuttle bus between them every 10 minutes if you land and depart from different buildings.

Drop-off is at your departure terminal. Send your flight numbers at booking so the timing is built round them.

• The clock starts at the meeting point — Not at the first landmark. Two of the six hours are the round trip, so read the itinerary as four hours of London.
